So the Habs traded for James Wisniewski yesterday, proving a couple of my savvy twitter peeps - HabsWatch and All_Habs - to be quite good at predicting which defenseman Pierre Gauthier would trade for.
Rumors abound that Gauthier has been shopping around for awhile for a big winger to compliment the smaller forwards on the Habs top 2 lines. Who do you think he'll get?
The Habs currently have about $2.2 million left in cap space. If you can make a trade and increase that space, fine, but you must be realistic in your guess. No trading Carey Price for Sidney Crosby, for example. You must work within the confines of reality here, as this is a best guess and not a fantasy trade.
Tweet me or email me your guess. Only one guess per participant. And you cannot guess a player that's already been guessed or else I'll get confused and frustrated by the whole thing.
If you need inspiration, I suggest checking out pending UFAs listed on the NHL.com website or on Capgeek.com. If you want to change your guess, you may do that also.
Pick lists will be updated every couple of days as necessary. So far the guesses are
(in alphabetical order):
Niclas Bergfors
Rene Bourque
Andrew Brunette
Zdeno Chara
Ryan Clowe
David Desharnais
Shane Doan
Mike Grier
Nik Hagman
Martin Havlat
Jarome Iginla
Mike Knuble
Chad LaRose
Joffrey Lupul
Patrick Marleau
Matt Moulson
Steve Ott
Dustin Penner
Brad Richards
Devin Setoguchi
Patrick Sharp
Anthony Stewart
Steve Sullivan
Raffi Torres
RJ Umberger
Scottie Upshall
Kris Versteeg
This contest will remain open until Pierre Gauthier actually signs a winger (or chooses not to and we hit the trade deadline) at which point the contest winner - if any - will receive a modest Habs-related prize (to be determined).
If there is no winner to be declared because no one guesses right (who saw Lars Eller coming), I'll enter all participants names in a hat to draw for the prize. If I win with my Niclas Bergfors choice, I'll do the hat draw thing also.
Good luck to everyone and thanks for playing!
Steve Ott is my pick.(mrdavelaws)
ReplyDeleteCool Dave! I'll update accordingly! Thanks for playing. :)
ReplyDeleteTyg, I'll pick Wee Dee Dee (David Desharnais) who, at 5'7" and 177 lbs, is not a big winger, actually he plays centre) but he is doing well with the Bulldogs. I think Pierre Gauthier will try him out and then make a further move as the deadline approaches.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking Gauthier will play the deadline --which I believe is March 2nd --to get a better deal from some cash-strapped franchise at the last minute for someone else but only later.
Desharnais currently leads the AHL standings with 42 points...
http://theahl.com/stats/player.php?id=1795
And let's not forget that his teammate Max Pacioretti was recently called up and the two may be able to work well together.Patches was leading the AHL before he got the call.
And yes, the AHL is not the NHL and Desharnais may not be able to make up with his huge heart what a bigger body would accomplish.
But sometimes little guys can make up for brawn with their brains and speed...
I could be totally wrong on this, but stay tuned.
Im banking on Rene Bourque. Good value, not a bad forward, not a huge financial dent...
ReplyDelete@Danno @Bro - Guys both of them have already been picked - see above list of registered picks already. If you want to enter this little contest, you have to pick someone not yet selected.
ReplyDeleteIf at first you don't succeed, well take another guess! ;)
Matt Moulson would be my second guess but im not actually entering, since im your brother. but i stand by Bourque....i think itll be him
ReplyDeleteOK I'll put down Matt Moulson for you, but no - you are not eligible to actually win the prize. Your guess is like mine - just for fun. :)
ReplyDeleteTyg, whoever picked David Desharnais first is your winner. The Habs just announced the call-up just hours ago.

I thought the list above was what we could pick from, not what was already picked. My bad.
Oh well, wouldn't be the first time I was right and wrong at the same time...
It's not easy being a Habs fan lately...
But...
Go Habs Go!
Tyg, I want to wish you a Happy New Year and all the best to you and your loved ones for 2011! And that also goes out to all the loyal Habs fans who keep on loving this crazy team through thick and thin.
Well shit! You are indeed correct Danno and thanks for pointing out the obvious to me! *forehead slaps* We have a winner! Congrats to David Halkett!
ReplyDeleteDanno - Happy New Year and all the best to you and your loved ones too for next year, and to all the crazy loyal Habs fans the year over! Thanks so much! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Tyg! :)
ReplyDeleteIn other news, Francois Gagnon is reporting that Maxim Lapierre has been traded to the Ducks...

Happy 2011 everyone!
Danno I see that. See above blog. Don't expect more than a draft pick or a prospect for Laps tho. What's blowing my mind is that Lappy - unhappy with his ice time under JM - reportedly demanded the trade at the beginning of the SEASON.
ReplyDeleteThis is the player whom Gomez once said "bleeds the bleu, blanc, rouge". WTF is Jacques DOING?
I see that now in your new blog page Tyg.
ReplyDeleteAfter looking at Capgeek I'll take a wild guess that we'll get Aaron Voros in return for Lapierre.
Note - Voros is currently recovering from a fractured orbital bone he suffered in a fight two weeks ago. He is expected to be back in action soon.
Wrong. Prospect (D-man) Brett Festerling and a 5th round pick is what we get for Max Lapierre.
ReplyDeleteCom'on LaRose!! Momma needs a new t-shirt. =P
